He is considered the man behind some of the most original and distinctive film scores. He was a master at evoking psychological and dramatic tension in his music to suit the dramatic needs of a film. He won his only Oscar in 1947 for writing the score for THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER. Herrmann made a powerful mark in radio and in 1934 he began a 25-year career as a conductor and composer in radio, working for the CBS. In 1938, he scored the notorious infamous presentation of Orson Welles' Halloween production of H. G. Wells' THE WAR OF THE WORLDS broadcast. He is best remembered for his collaborations with some of Hollywood's most celebrated film directors like Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Martin Scorsese and Brian DePalma. Described as a perfectionist, he believed that most directors didn't have a clue about music so he would blithely ignore their instructions. His filmography includes CITIZEN KANE, THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, VERTIGO, MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, CAPE FEAR, FAHRENHEIT 451, OBSESSION, TAXI DRIVER and many hours of episodic television including THE TWILIGHT ZONE and HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL, among others. These historic recordings were originally released on vinyl in the 1970's. Citadel Records is proud to bring these recordings back into the marketplace, under license from Unicorn Records retaining the original liner notes written by Christopher Palmer including the participation of the composer.TRACK LISTING Mr. Scratch (From "The Devil And Daniel Webster") The Ballad of Springfield Mountain (From "The Devil And Daniel Webster") The Sleigh-Ride (From "The Devil And Daniel Webster") The Miser's Waltz (From "The Devil And Daniel Webster") Finale / Swing Your Partners (From "The Devil And Daniel Webster") Overture (From "Welles Raises Kane") Theme and Variations (From "Welles Raises Kane") Ragtime / The Saturday Night Band Concert (From "Welles Raises Kane") Meditation / Antimacassar (From "Welles Raises Kane") Finale / Pursuit and Happiness (From "Welles Raises Kane") Main Title / Valse Lente / Kidnap (From "Obsession") Newsboy / The Tape / The Ferry (From "Obsession") The Tomb / Sandra (From "Obsession") The Church / Court's Confession / Bryn Mawr (From "Obsession") New Orleans / Wedding / Court, The Morning After (From "Obsession") The Plane / Court and La Salle's Struggle / Airport (From "Obsession")

Psycho (Original Soundtrack) is a soundtrack by Bernard Herrmann on Varese Sarabande. This is the CD edition. This edition was released on July 29, 1997.

Bernard Herrmann Much has been made of composer Bernard Herrmann's choice to use only razor-sharp, slashing strings for his score to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. And heaven knows it works like a dream (or a nightmare), the music feeling as edgy and colorless as the noir-ish black-and-white photography. But as noticeably effective as the knife-screeching violins are in the famous shower scene (followed by those deadly blows from the basses and cellos), they work just as powerfully--though perhaps not as noticeably--all throughout the picture. Herrmann evokes dread and tension with just a few notes, or captures Janet Leigh's flighty panic in pizzicato as she hits the fateful road to the Bates Motel after impulsively stealing a large sum of money from her employer. --Jim Emerson

Vertigo (Original Soundtrack) is a soundtrack by Bernard Herrmann on Varese Sarabande.
