It is a moving demonstration of the healing power of music in genreal and the vast inventiveness, glorious sweep, and aheer vitality of Sonny Rollins' music in particular. The raw-boned sound and spellbinding solos of the Harlem-born, septuagenarian make Sonny Rollins the "Saxophone Colossus." On this live date, recorded in Boston four days after the horrific September 11th attacks in New York ? which Rollins witnessed ? the leader and his band mates: trombonist (and nephew) Clifton Anderson, bassist Bob Cranshaw, pianist Stephen Scott, African percussionist Kimati Dinizuli, and drummer Perry Wilson, unleash the healing power of music. Armed with wood, ivory, brass and steel, they played snappy and soulful renditions of the standards "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," "Why Was I Born?," "Where or When," and the title track. The lone Rollins selection, an original calypso entitled "Global Warming," is a worthy successor to his classic "St. Thomas." The legendary saxophonist is a master of thematic improvisation, as he bends, molds and transmutes the DNA of each song, and uplifts the audience, through the undying power of art.--Eugene Holley, Jr.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0799/7787/3626/files/WITHOUTASONGTHE911CO025218934220_zuclht.jpg?v=1770960602
sonny-rollins-newks-time-blue-note-classic-vinyl-series-vinyl
Sonny Rollins - Newk's Time (Blue Note Classic Series) - [Vinyl]

Newk's Time (Blue Note Classic Series) is a jazz album by Sonny Rollins on Blue Note Records. The lineup includes trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, trombonists J.J. Johnson and Jimmy Cleveland, and tuba player Don Butterfield, supported by a rhythm section of pianist Dick Katz, guitarist Rene Thomas, bassist Henry Grimes, and drummer Roy Haynes. This is the vinyl edition. This edition was released on January 16, 2026.

The Bridge" is one of Sonny Rollins's most celebrated albums recording in January - February 1962 and released in the same year. It marked Rollins's return to recordings after his famous three-year sabbatical (1959 - 1961), when he stepped away from the jazz scene at the height of his career to practice intensively. It was 1959, Rollins he was already one of the most respected saxophonists alive: he had made Saxophone Colossus (1956), A Night at the Village Vanguard (1957), and The Freedom Suite (1958). Musicians and critics wondered why he stopped recording at his peak but he wanted to refine his technique, expand his sound, and push past what he felt were limitations in his playing. During his break, Rollins would literally practice for hours every day on the Williamsburg Bridge in Manhattan so he wouldn't disturb his neighbors: the album's title is a direct reference to that period of self-imposed exile for his artistic growth. Rollins chose a piano-less quartet with guitar (which was unusual at the time for a horn-led group) Jim Hall guitarist was highly influential and his contribute inspiring future saxophone-guitar quartets. By the time The Bridge appeared in 1962, expectations were sky-high: it was seen not just as an album, but as a return statement. Critics initially had mixed feelings (some expecting a more radical "revolution"), but over time the album has become recognised as one of Rollins's most enduring works and is today viewed as a milestone in modern jazz. A personal triumph for Rollins symbolising his artistic rebirth after his sabbatical. Track Listing Without a Song Where Are You John S. This is the CD edition. This edition was released on June 23, 2023.

Svart Records proudly presents Sonny Rollins with the Heikki Sarmanto trio, in an extremely rare live performance at Finland Festival in the summer of 1972. Available for the first time, fifty years after it was initially recorded, this incredible show features Sarmanto on the Fender Rhodes electric piano, his brother Pekka Sarmanto on bass and Esko Rosnell on drums. Legend of American Jazz, "Saxophone Colossus" Sonny Rollins hand picked Heikki Sarmanto and his Finnish trio for this night of improvisation and mutual respect that culminated in years of collaboration after. The music conjured throughout this live extravaganza is everything a Jazz aficionado could have hoped for, with extensive improvisations and incredible soloing by the musicians. Two standards and one original by Rollins, which last between sixteen and twenty-four minutes, illustrate both the quartet's vibe and supreme virtuosity. Taking place at the magnificent Finlandia Hall, an architectural marvel, which was completed only a few months earlier, and recorded by the YLE (The Finnish Broadcasting Company), this legendary concert has been expertly mastered by Pauli Saastamoinen at the infamous Finnvox Studios in 2022 to perfectly highlight the magic that was in the air all those years ago. Rollins seems to be especially in high spirits throughout the show and his powerful and expressive playing, full of humor, is simply marvelous. He even manages to quote some hints of Jean Sibelius' "Finlandia" tone poem as a tribute to the venue. Through our tireless efforts at Svart Records to preserve our musical culture, you can now be re-introduced to an important piece in the jigsaw of Finnish Jazz history, immortalised on double vinyl gatefold and CD and both limited to only 1000 copies.

Saxophone Colossus is a soundtrack and jazz album by Sonny Rollins on Concord Jazz Inc..
