La Ville morte, opéra en 3 actes AMAZON.COM The New York City Opera scored an astonishing success when they revived this lovely score a couple of decades ago. Since then, it has become the one Korngold opera to remain in the repertory of major opera houses. The story is set in the Belgian city of Bruges, where a man is haunted by the specter of his dead wife. Korngold's score is characteristically lush, with a generous fund of Romantic melody and orchestration that has a characteristically luminous quality. RCA recorded the City Opera production, but of course it's out of print; in any event, it was not noticeably superior to this excellent performance, taped live in Sweden. German-only text, but at a budget price, who's complaining? --David Hurwitz
