With the laissez-faire voice of Edie Brickell (circa "What I Am") and the light-jazz affectations reminiscent of Norah Jones, Hayley Sales's major label debut Sunseed is cloaked in familiarity, comfortable like an old cotton T-shirt. Right off the top, there is evidence of her West Coast-affected surfer/hippie qualities; Jack Johnson comparisons can be applied to a number of her songs, most notably in disc opener "Jailcell Mind" as well as "What You Want" and "Too Much." In that same relaxed style, "Paint by Numbers" is a prime indicator of her appeal; as she oozes out a dreamy chorus about floating upstream, you can almost feel the rubber of the raft under your feet. Occasionally, Sales's sound moves from acoustic guitar-driven pop to a light reggae sound ("Keep Drivin?" "All Roads Lead to Jamaica"); it is a tough sell, coming out of the mouth of a white girl that lives on a British Columbia blueberry farm, but her easygoing style is fluid and languid enough to make it work. At times, her voice and music so mirrors Norah Jones that it almost requires a double-take ("I'd Rather Be Lost") but where she shines the brightest is disc highlight "Braille" a song that contains the shiver factor in spades. That evocative track offers great glimpse of what talents lie within this young songwriter just coming into her own. --Denise Sheppard
