Sarah Vaughan is widely recognized as the singer's singer, one of the true greats of jazz whose talent enabled her to embrace the wider pop market. Vaughan was famed for her remarkable vocal range, effortless phrasing and harmonic sense, developed in her early career. Meanwhile, Woody Herman's 1963 Herd was widely regarded as one of the very best that the veteran clarinetist and bandleader had ever assembled. That year,brDownbeat magazine wrote of the Herman Orchestra: The band does perfectly what is called for in each case: playing with fiery frenzy, brcooking gently, or creating a mood. brbrThe duo came together in 1963 to record several in the series of radio programs called The Guard Sessions, sponsored as a recruitment promotion by the US National Guard. These recordings are therefore a unique marriage of very special talents, Vaughan's effortlessly brilliant vocals on eight of the numbers, her brilliant technique enabling her to interact with the supremely tight and swinging Herd to great effect, who contribute some scintillating instrumentals. This is one that will appeal not only to Vaughan and Herman devotees, but also to jazz and big band enthusiasts interested in a unique collaboration of these majorbrartists. Includes the studio intros and banter to provide the atmosphere of the original radio programs.brbrAll of Acrobat Music's Premier Collection titles are showcased in deluxe packages with unique, consistent packaging, which include o-cards, extensive liner notes and either a large number of tracks or lengthy play time.
