Rising out of the rubble of Vancouver power rockers DDT, Shocore play neither devil rock nor disco but a heavy amalgam of hip-hop and metal. As bands like Rage Against the Machine have proven, the two styles fit well together, but the mix only works if the ideas are fresh and the playing interesting. Devil Rock Disco comes up short in both categories. Tracks like "Bonecracker" and "Get Up" are loud and full of aggression, but sound a bit empty once the novelty of Sho's power chords and Core's awkward rhymes wears off. The occasional hints of techno production are a nice touch, but ultimately, Devil Core Disco is as pedestrian and dreary as the group's endless stories about getting loaded and hanging out with friends. --Matt Galloway
