Academy Award® winner Sir Anthony Hopkins (Beowulf, Slipstream) stars in this 1982 television movie adaptation of Victor Hugo's classic story of unrequited love, illicit passion and injustice. Set in the year 1450 against the background of the famed Paris cathedral, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, is a story about Quasimodo, a deformed hunchback who is hated and feared by all. When a beautiful gypsy, Esmerelda, shows him the only kindness he has ever known, he falls in love with her and through a series of violent battles and evil paramours he tries to valiantly defend her until the end. The Hunchback of Notre Dame also stars Derek Jacobi (The Golden Compass), Lesley-Anne Down (TV's "The Bold and the Beautiful"), Sir John Gielgud (Elizabeth) and Robert Powell (BBC's "Holby City").
